Sentry Responsibilities
Each Sentry is tied to an individual member of the Yuriban pantheon, and is granted powers that she may use in defense of the island. These powers are directly tied to the deity the Sentry serves and are relevant only in that deity's sphere of influence. A Sentry's special abilities are only accessible in defense of the island itself, and cannot be evoked by any means for other causes.
Though not specifically tasked to do so, the Sentries sometimes take it upon themselves to educate others about their patron deities, the pantheon as a whole, and Yuriban culture in general, assisting citizens and visitors in learning and acclimation and acting as cultural ambassadors and representatives.
Sentry Investiture
| OOC: Becoming a Sentry |
| Becoming a sentry is a gradual RP process. Doing so involves a character displaying a growing link with a goddess over time while RPing with others. Some goddesses have active Sentries already (Amanohara, Engetsu and Zokutou) and some will never have one (Inishie). Generally, however, it's a just matter of picking a deity, working to develop an IC link, and getting involved. Anyone interested in such a storyline should feel free to page those already involved with ideas for inclusion. |
The revelation of new Sentries has no set process. This makes it difficult to answer questions regarding the growth of the Sentry cadre. Each Sentry's investiture is a unique and intensely personal experience guided by both Goddess and chosen. Each investiture has, so far, been overseen by the Guardian breisleach, but it is unknown if her participation is necessary or simply convenient.
The investiture forges a link between Goddess and Sentry, marking the chosen with her patron's power in ways subtle or overt. Most Sentries have shown marked physical changes caused by investiture (Ella, Lumi and Kashiri) while one (Nagisa Vendaris) has shown none overtly; however, Nagisa chooses to maintain her blessed form in sympathy with her patron, voluntarily displaying a similar "mark".
In certain cases, behavior against the tenets of a goddess may result in the withdrawal of power or favor from a Sentry, at which point the office is also considered withdrawn. The case of Lumi is the best-known example of this.
Known Sentries
There are currently three confirmed Sentries. In order of investiture, they are:

Knowledge of the existence of the Sentries became fully public sometime in August of 2006. All currently known Sentries wear a pendant of white jade as a kind of badge of office. These pendants match the ones worn by the Guardians.
