Hokuto Sumeragi is an extremely talented onmyouji (also referred to as a yin-yang sorcerer or spirit medium) and the former 13th Head of the Sumeragi clan. She can be soft-spoken at times and is extremely kindhearted, though possesses a well-hidden violent side.

History
Early in her life, Hokuto spent much of her childhood sequestered with her twin brother, Subaru, in their family compound after the death of her father and mother at the hands of a spiritual assassin, the Sakurazukamori, learning the family art. As a child, Hokuto had an encounter with the Sakurazukamori that was at one time blocked from her memory and she could only see fragments of in dreams. During this encounter, the Sakurazukamori made a bet with young Hokuto, one that would come back to haunt her later on. It is during this meeting that Hokuto received the mark of the Sakurazukamori (a mark reserved for those to be killed by the organization) an inverted pentacle on the back of each hand, something her Grandmother (the 12th family head) tries to seal by forcing her to wear gloves.
In her early life, Hokuto was sixteen and living in Tokyo with her brother. It's not entirely clear how the twins ended up there but it is clear that the decision for them to move is not one that the family entirely agreed with. Trying to juggle going to school and plying her trade as an onmyoujitsu, Hokuto and Subaru met and befriend a local veterinarian, Seishi Sakurazuka. Charming, perverse, and claiming to be totally in love with Hokuto, Seishi integrated herself into their lives, never outwardly giving any hints that she's more than what she says; that she is, in fact, the legendary Sakurazukamori and that she's come to collect on the bet she made with Hokuto as a child.
Over the course of the year despite Hokuto's protestations, she and Seishi do drew closer and closer, something that is watched with approval and some worry by Subaru. And when Seishi's right eye was destroyed defending Hokuto, she's forced to finally admit that she's in love with Seishi, something that the older woman had been waiting on. As soon as Hokuto realized and admitted her love for Seishi to herself, Seishi reveals her true colors, torturing her with the knowledge that she is the Sakurazukamori and that she cared nothing for Hokuto. That Hokuto had in effect, lost their little bet. Leaving her broken and bleeding and without sight in one eye, Seishi disappeared while Hokuto entered something of a catatonic state. Subaru confronted Seishi dressed as Hokuto during that time and using what little powers he had, worked a spell on Seishi as she killed him so that if she attempted to use the same spell on Hokuto later, it will backfire and take her life instead. It is only Subaru's death at the hands of the Sakurazukamori that roused Hokuto from her catatonia but it's clear that the girl who went into the catatonia is a very different from the woman who emerged.
After Subaru's death, Hokuto drifted, pushed by both a need to avenge Subaru's death and some darker need. It is here in her life that Hokuto would find passage on an old sailing vessel bound for Singapore, but when the ship became lost in a thick fog bank, it nearly ran aground on the island of Yuriba. Hokuto, sensing the strange spiritual qualities of the island set off from the ship, warning the crew to stay aboard. After a brief exploration of the island she returned to the harbor she had rowed into from the sailing ship, only to find that both the fog and the ship were nowhere to be found, and she was stranded. After arriving on the island in the midst of October in 2006, Hokuto had unknowingly been rocketed over fifteen years into the future.
Hokuto has since lived on the island, integrating with the people and the native religion. During the early months of 2007 she returned to Tokyo Japan with Seishi Sakurazuka for personal reasons. While the two were only gone a handful of months on Yuriba, six years passed to them in Tokyo before they returned, resulting in the young Hokuto Sumeragi now being in her early twenties.
In the fall, after having moved out of a former lover's home, Hokuto came to rebuild and found the Starlight Shrine, a center for learning about Yuriban Animism located on the western side of Yuriba in a forest of yami no matsui. After the repair of the original structure, which dated back to the Lilian Era, Hokuto sought to make expansions on her own to the shrine through a magical process she was not yet ready to utilize. Hokuto attempted to perform the technique but was not physically or mentally prepared for, and was spiritually and physically drained. She was bed-ridden for much of a day, trying to recover her personal stores and has since given up plans on expansion of the shrine in that manner for the time being.
Recent events have added much life to Hokuto's days on Yuriba. Between having accepted the immigrant girl Iessica as her adoptive daughter, to welcoming a host of new friends into her life, Hokuto has also changed her long-standing relationship with Tess. The two having grown apart, less lovers now, and more close family, though Hokuto still shows the wolfgirl a great deal of adoration and affection, and very much loves the crimson-eyed girl. Also, Hokuto has taken up a public relationship with one of her students, Mirabelle O'Shea, whom she is absolutely smitten with. The couple was first seen together in public at the First Snow ceremony in 2007, where Hokuto had come to witness Mirabelle as one of the dancers in the performance. After a heartfelt discussion with Nisa, Hokuto and her fiance both agreed to change the situation of their engagement, and proposed to their longtime love breisleach. With the kitsune's former wife having vanished without a trace with breisleach's daughter Caile, Hokuto and Nisa both agreed that it would be appropriate for the three to enter into marraige together with a commitment of always staying together. They have begun tenative plans for the marraige to take place in the first month of the new year.
Of course, none of that ever happened, and without more than a hastily written letter, Hokuto disappeared from Yuriba forever... But like most Yuribans have become aware over time; nothing is forever, not even departures.
Special Powers
Hokuto is an accomplished – especially for her age – Onmyouji, capable of affecting spirits and other denizens of the spirit world greatly. She has a natural sense for magical environments and creatures, and a very strong understanding of demons and otherworldly entities. When armed with ofuda (paper talismans with sacred scripts on them) Hokuto can create a variety of simple magical effects that Hokuto uses to aid others in need, such as the mending of wounds or the blessing of a house for new occupants.

Send an @mail to Hokuto with whatever you want, and she'll be considered to have dreamt it by the next time she ICly sleeps. Anyone is welcome to use this power to further their own character development, and the staff is welcomed to use Hokuto's dreams as a hook for any potential TinyPlots that may come about as well. Remember, Hokuto will react ICly to anything she sees in her dreams, so plan accordingly! |
Thanks to assistance from Merin and Mirabelle, Hokuto has come to understand and control an ability to walk into other people's dreams, and pull them into hers. The power is mostly reflexive, being drawn into the dreams of a sleeping person to experience or see something, or depending on the special magical talents of the dreamer, communicate or otherwise interact with them. While donned in Tenteisei's blessing, Hokuto seems prone to having prophetic dreams and visions, such as the ones she recieved when Inishie-san threatened to erupt in the spring of 2007.
Shikigami
A spiritual familiar serving Hokuto, the shikigami is an elemental representation of a season. Currently Hokuto has summoned the following Shikigami:
- Winter: A four-winged white dove with three narrow almond-shaped eyes that has drifting snowflakes of light that fall from its form, this shikigami is a representation of the facets of winter; cold, renewal, and change. During one of her dream-travels, the bartender of Leona's, Real, nicknamed the shikigami Yume (japanese for dream) in a very unexpected and highly coincidental manner.
- Yume's spiritual essence has been discorporated and the shikigami is no longer summoned.
